Respiration/Restoration - Nos. 1-3

Commissioned for the University of St. Thomas in 2024, the series Respiration/Restoration shows the composition of air pollutants in Minnesota in 2011, 2014, and 2017, using data gathered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Each color in the paintings corresponds to a different pollutant: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, lead, carbon monoxide, ammonia, particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Portraying an environmental story about the power of collective action, the perhaps surprising detail that this series shows is changes in policies and real time action has led to an improvement in air quality during this time period.

Schoenecker Center for STEAM education is a national model for interdisciplinary learning that combines science and engineering spaces with liberal arts programs and significant student and faculty collaboration space.

Respiration/Restoration - Nos. 1-3 are permanently located on the fourth floor, placed between entrances to the new 4th floor chemistry labs. The complete University of St. Thomas art collection can also be viewed online.
