YOU ARE SKY was part of an exhibition at Rochester Art Center of new work by five Minnesota-based artists in the Art(ists) on the Verge 10 Fellowship: Lindsy Halleckson, Essma Imady, Kathy McTavish, Khadijah Muse, and Chris Rackley.
In YOU ARE SKY, Halleckson created a site-specific installation that considered the technologies we use to protect ourselves from the outside world and explores barriers, tension, and patterns.
Composed of three elements, she invited viewers to explore and interact with the sculptural works. WINDSHIELD was composed of fiberglass sheets, like the screens on our windows. I PROMISE I'LL MAKE IT UP TO YOU invited viewers inside with alluring warmth and reflection. VANISHING POINT was a pair of low-frequency tones that took on a physical pattern that changed depending on the viewer’s location in the room. Together, these works ask viewers to look beyond using all of their senses, and change their perspective to gain understanding and appreciation for the world that surrounds us.
Art(ists) on the Verge (AOV) is an intensive, mentor-based fellowship program for Minnesota-based, emerging artists working experimentally at the intersection of art, technology, and digital culture with a focus on network-based practices that are interactive and/or participatory. The AOV fellowship program is administered by Northern Lights.mn with generous support from the Jerome Foundation.
